Australia lose to Pakistan but still go through
Australia were on the wrong end of a Pakistan bowling master-class in yesterday’s final round of Super Eights games but were still able to qualify for the semi-final on Friday.
Although they were defeated the Australians (T20 Cricket Outright Betting) managed to reach the 112 they required to make their qualification for the semis a certainty, while the result also ensured that South Africa were knocked out, regardless of what happened in their final Super Eights match against India.
The 32-run margin in Pakistan’s favour meant that India had to win by a wide margin against South Africa in order to claim the last semi-final spot. However the 2007 T20 World champions could only win by one run and have gone out at the Super Eights stage for the third consecutive tournament.
Australia‘s first loss of the tournament reopened their former doubts when confronted by quality spin on a slow, turning pitch, and also demonstrated the chaos that can ensue if Shane Watson and David Warner do not give the innings a rapid start. Pakistan (T20 Cricket Outright Betting) did not use a pace bowler until the 18th over of the innings.
The teams remaining in the competition can be expected to use similar tactics against Australia for the remainder of the event (T20 Semi-final Betting). In the end it took a half century of considerable composure from Michael Hussey to ensure Australia’s qualification.
